Construction Trends 2017
In 2017, some commercial construction trends have popped up. Many of them are great, and hopefully they will continue to stick around for many years to come. Feel free to ask your contractor about these trends if you would like to know more.
Greater Emphasis on Safety
In recent years, numerous construction companies stress the importance of their workers remaining safe while on the site. Part of this comes down to the additional regulations put in place by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The primary ways injuries occur in the worksite include:
- Caught in between different structures
- Electrocution
- Struck by an object
- Falling or slipping
This trend will hopefully continue in the years to come. If the construction industry can show how it is much safer than in years past, it will have an easier time attracting employees.
More Permanent Modular Construction
Modular construction refers to the practice of bringing pre-constructed building units to the site and simply putting it into place. Modular construction has been around for several decades as well, but it only recently caught on in popularity. Many property owners have talked to contractors about this due to the fact it can be done for less money and in a shorter amount of time.
Role of Technology
Decades old buildings often can’t handle the technological demands of modern society. Most businesses are reliant on computers and a number of office devices. Some office buildings are even incorporating augmented reality devices into conference rooms.
In addition to incorporating more technology into the actual building, new technologies can be seen prevalently in the development process. For example, it is no longer unheard of for contractors to use drones to survey a piece of land before beginning construction.
Enhanced Growth
Overall, expectations for the commercial construction industry are to see some big gains this year and probably in the next years to come. Projections indicate 2017 will see a 6.3 percent increase in revenue when compared to 2016. Specific industries expect to see the greatest amount of growth. Office buildings, health care facilities and lodging buildings project to see some excellent growth. However, not all industries are seeing the same growth. Manufacturing or industrial buildings expect to see a decrease.
Whether this trend will continue depends entirely on what the government decides to spend on. Additional revenue going into infrastructure would help greatly in ensuring companies in the industry have the tools they need to help people in communities across the country.
